“Becky, my babies love these cupcakes!! I made them yesterday and gave them each half of one yesterday and today.” – Lorena

Pro Tip: Some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat. If you want to make these wheat-free, you can use rice flour or coconut flour as a replacement. These alternate flours will work but might change the consistency a bit.

Notes

  • Peanut Butter: Some peanut butter brands are including xylitol to cut the sugar in their peanut butter. Do not use any peanut butter containing xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Just check for natural peanut butter and check the ingredients.
  • Honey: Do not feed honey to immunocompromised dogs or dogs under 1 year old.
  • Flour: Some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat. If you want to make these wheat free, you can use rice flour or coconut flour as a replacement. These alternate flours will work, but might change the consistency a bit.
  • Dogs can have food allergies, just like humans! If you’re unsure about any ingredient, check with your vet to keep your pup happy and healthy.
  • In place of the applesauce, you can use 100% pure pumpkin puree or mashed bananas.
  • In place of the coconut oil, you can use sunflower oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, or vegetable oil.
  • In place of the whole wheat flour, you can use rice flour, coconut flour, or all-purpose flour.
  • For smaller cupcakes, you can bake these in a mini cupcake tin instead. Just reduce the baking time!
  • Nutritional information does not include milk bones.
Storage: Store dog cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Dog ice cream is the perfect treat for your furry friend! When the weather gets hot, treat your puppy to some homemade dog ice cream so they don’t feel left out. This easy recipe has all the right ingredients (peanut butter, yogurt, and bacon), so they can enjoy their own bowl instead of watching you eat yours!

Puppy Ice Cream

This homemade dog ice cream recipe with yogurt, peanut butter, and bacon is just the thing for your favorite friend!

A while ago, I made my best sous-chef (my Yellow Lab, Scout) some homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats. Since then, I’ve been brainstorming ideas for other dog-friendly treats to make for her.

This puppy ice cream was a huge success for her. She especially loved the bacon! This ice cream freezes really well, so I have more waiting for her in the freezer. She’ll thank me once the summer heat rolls in.

Why You’ll Love this Dog Ice Cream Recipe:

  • EASY: Making homemade dog ice cream is SO easy. You only need two ingredients (3 if you want to add the bacon), and a few minutes to prep.
  • GOOD FOR DOGS: This recipe is made only with ingredients that are safe for dogs to eat, so no need to worry about feeding them this treat.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE: Consider this ice cream a base recipe. Add other things your dog loves, or make doggie ice cream sandwiches!

Ingredients

  • Peanut Butter: Go for a creamy version instead of chunky, and natural ingredients instead of processed. I used Smuckers Natural.
  • Plain Yogurt: I recommend using Greek yogurt because it has significantly less lactose than regular yogurt.
  • Bacon Bits: This ingredient is optional, but your dog will love it!

Trademark note: In the spirit of transparency, please note that Smucker’s is a proprietary brand that I want to acknowledge and give credit to.

How to Make Dog Ice Cream

You can jump to the recipe card for full ingredients & instructions!

This is such a simple and quick recipe, there are hardly any steps!

  1. Combine the peanut butter, yogurt, and bacon bits (optional ingredient).
  2. Freeze until it becomes firm, or the desired texture. It’s fine for them to eat it whether it’s frozen or not.

Can dogs eat ice cream?

Dogs should not be fed regular “human” ice cream. They have different digestive systems than us, so they can’t digest dairy very well. Sugar, chocolate, and too much lactose can cause problems including gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting.

But that’s why we have this delicious doggie ice cream recipe, so they can enjoy it too!

Can people eat this puppy ice cream?

This recipe uses real food ingredients, yogurt and peanut butter, so it’s definitely safe for humans to eat too. So if your kids find their way to it, or you just REALLY want to taste it too, all will be fine!

How much should I give to my dog?

It depends on the size and weight of your dog. I recommend starting with 1/4 cup, and then increasing the amount for bigger dogs.

What other flavors can I add to dog ice cream?

You can add other ingredients based on what your dog likes and what they can digest well. Some fruits are okay for dogs to eat, so bananas or strawberries might be a good option to try.

ice cream scoop in a metal container of puppy ice cream
peanut butter dog ice cream topped with bits of bacon

Tips!

  • These ingredients are safe for dogs to eat, but I always recommend keeping an eye on your pup after feeding them something new to see how they react to it.
  • This ice cream lasts up to 8 weeks in the freezer. So make a big batch and save it, so your furry friends can enjoy this treat for a long time.
  • You could add a splash of chicken broth to enhance the flavor.
  • Make sure to avoid giving your dog any sweetened dairy products. Greek yogurt for dogs is good, thanks to its high protein and low lactose content.

How is this different than regular ice cream?

Besides the ingredients, this dog ice cream recipe is softer and easier to scoop than other frozen treats. That makes it a great choice for dogs that tend to scarf treats whole or for senior dogs with limited teeth. Overall, it’s just easier to eat and digest!

How do you make puppy ice cream sandwiches?

Add in some Peanut Butter Dog Treats and make an ice cream sandwich! Scout is a fan, without a doubt!

To make an ice cream sandwich for dogs, place a scoop of this dog-friendly ice cream between two dog treats, scrape the excess off the sides, and freeze again to help them set.

Your pup is absolutely going to LOVE this homemade dog ice cream! So you won’t have to worry about them watching you and begging for a bite of yours when dessert time comes around. Everyone gets a treat!

Homemade Dog Treats are my favorite way to show my pets that we love them like family! This homemade peanut butter dog treats recipe is an easy dog biscuit that I believe our pups would request every week if they could. I made this recipe in 2013 for my dog Scout, my first baby. I make them now for our two labs, Mabel and Daisy. Every pet deserves the love of a homemade treat and this is just the recipe to give them.

5-Star Review

“My husband and I wanted to bond over something, so we decided to make these for our two dogs. They go crazy over these. Cannot control themselves. I took a nibble too, and they’re not bad for humans either. They stayed nice and chewy sitting in a tupperware on the counter. Our smallest dog (8lbs) doesn’t like crunchy things, so the fact these are chewy was perfect. We even gifted some to the German Shepherd next door. We will be making these again!” – Sarah

Best Dog Treat Recipe

I love making homemade peanut butter dog treats because they’re so easy and use just a few simple ingredients. This recipe comes together in no time—just mix, roll, cut, and bake.

The dough is super easy to work with, and the treats come out soft and chewy, perfect for pups of all sizes. Plus, I add a little peanut butter frosting on top to make them extra special. If you want a fun, quick way to spoil your dog with a homemade treat, this is the perfect recipe.

Note: Dogs can have allergies, just like people, so while these ingredients are all safe for dogs in general, make sure you know what your furry friend can and cannot eat. I recommend giving them a small bite to test these treats out before you start using them regularly.

Course Pet Treats
Cuisine American
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings 24 treats
Calories 132kcal

Equipment

  • Kitchen Scale (optional)
  • Baking Sheet
  • Rolling Pin
  • Piping Tip Set

Ingredients

For the Dog Treats

  • cups whole wheat flour 300 grams (see note)
  • 1 large egg 50 grams
  • 1 cup peanut butter 270 grams (see note)
  • 1 cup water 227 grams
  • 2 tablespoons honey 43 grams (see note)

For the Frosting

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter 34 grams
  • 1 tablespoon honey 21 grams
  • cup cornstarch 37 grams (can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder)
  • 3-4 tablespoons hot water 43-57 grams

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour and the egg. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, and stir until you have a stiff dough. The dough becomes very firm and sticky. You may need to use your hands, or the paddle attachment on your mixer.
2½ cups whole wheat flour, 1 large egg, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons honey
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about ½-inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. The treats barely spread and rise, so get creative with your shapes.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden. Once done, set aside to cool. (If you have smaller cookies, use less time, otherwise the bottom might burn.)
  • To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwavable bowl, and heat in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until melted.
2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1 tablespoon honey
  • Add the melted peanut butter mixture to the cornstarch and stir until just combined.
    ⅓ cup cornstarch
  • Slowly add in the water 1 tablespoon at a time until you have reached the consistency that you would like. For a thinner frosting, add more water.
    3-4 tablespoons hot water
  • Add the frosting to a piping bag and pipe designs on top of each dog treat.
  • Frost the treats with the peanut butter/honey mixture for an even more tempting cookie.

Notes

  • Flour Alternatives: Some dogs are allergic to wheat. For a wheat-free option, use rice flour or coconut flour, though this may slightly alter the texture.
  • Peanut Butter Warning: Avoid peanut butter containing xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs. Stick to natural peanut butter or substitute with nut butter, pumpkin purée, or mashed sweet potato. Adjust the dough consistency as needed.
  • Honey Caution: Do not give honey to immunocompromised dogs or puppies under 1 year old.
  • Frosting Consistency: For decorative frosting, use a thicker mixture (2–3 Tbsp water) to outline designs and let it dry for 10 minutes. Use a thinner mixture (3–4 Tbsp water) to fill in the design, smoothing with your finger.
  • Crunchier Treat Option: For a crispier biscuit, roll the dough thinner or bake at 200°F for a longer time to dry them out.
Storage: Store homemade peanut butter dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months or in the freezer for up to 8 months.

How to Make Homemade Dog Treats Step by Step

Mix the Dough: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour and 1 large egg. Add 1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup water, and 2 tbsp honey.

A glass mixing bowl with ingredients for dog treats, including peanut butter, honey, flour, egg, and water, before being mixed into a dough.

Form the Dough: Stir until the mixture forms a stiff dough. The dough will be firm and sticky, so you may need to use your hands or a stand mixer with a paddle attachment.

A ball of peanut butter dog treat dough in a glass mixing bowl, slightly rough in texture, ready to be rolled out.

Roll and Cut the Dough: Lightly flour a work surface and roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into fun shapes. Since the treats will not spread or rise significantly, you can make them any shape you like.

A large rolled-out sheet of dough with multiple bone-shaped dog treats cut out, still attached to the unbaked dough.

Bake the Treats: Place the shaped treats onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown. If making smaller treats, check them a few minutes earlier to prevent burning. Once baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before adding the frosting.

Prepare the Frosting: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 2 tbsp peanut butter and 1 tbsp honey. Microwave in 15-second increments, stirring after each, until the mixture is smooth and fully melted.

Mix the Frosting: Add the melted peanut butter and honey mixture to ⅓ cup cornstarch and stir until just combined. Slowly add 3–4 tbsp hot water, 1 tbsp at a time, mixing well until the frosting reaches the desired consistency. If you prefer a thinner frosting, add more water as needed.

Frost and Decorate: Transfer the frosting to a piping bag and pipe designs onto the cooled dog treats. Allow the frosting to set before serving them to your pup.

How to Store

Once fully cooled, I store homemade peanut butter dog biscuits in an airtight container (very important) in the refrigerator, for up to 1 month. This recipe makes 24 medium dog cookies, so you’ll have plenty to share whenever your dog needs a healthy treat.

How to Freeze

This easy recipe for homemade dog treats can be stored in the freezer for up to 8 months. I recommend placing a pan of them in the freezer for about an hour, then transferring them to a freezer-safe bag or container. This will prevent them from sticking together, so you can grab as many as you need, and keep the rest in storage. Move them to the fridge to thaw.

I love making these easy cheese dog treats to give to my pooches! I only need 4 inexpensive ingredients and less than an hour to make these crunchy, cheesy dog treats. These always get my puppys’ tails wagging!

cheddar cheese dog treats on baking sheet

These cheese dog treats are made with natural ingredients, so I feel good about giving these treats to my furry friends. All I need are flour, eggs, water, and, of course, cheese! My dogs love these tasty cheese biscuits, and I’m sure yours will as well!

What’s in this Cheese Dog Treats Recipe?

  • Flour: I like using whole wheat flour for dog biscuits for the extra nutritional value. Other types of flour are fine to use, as long as you know your dog isn’t allergic.
  • Eggs: Help bind the biscuits and give them structure. They’re also a great source of healthy fats, omega-3, and protein.
  • Water: Helps hydrate the treats so everything stays together.
  • Cheese: I used cheddar cheese in these dog treats, and my dogs loved them! Dogs can have almost any kind of cheese in moderation (avoid blue-veined cheeses!). Lower-fat cheeses tend to be better for them, so you can opt for a low-fat cheddar here.

Tips for Success

  • This dough for these cheese dog treats reminds me a bit of bread in that you really need to knead it for a while to get all the ingredients combined. I used my hands to do this, but you could also break out the stand mixer and let that do the work for you!
  • You can use any size or shape of cookie cutter for this recipe. If you choose to make your biscuits thinker than ¾-inch you may need to cook a few minutes longer. The treats should be crunchy all the way through.
  • These are treats and should be given as such. They shouldn’t replace your dogs’ main meals. One or two a day is plenty.
  • While I wouldn’t exactly recommend humans snacking on these, if a little one gets their hands on them, they’ll be okay!

How to Store

Once your cheese dog treats have cooled, place them in an airtight container and they will keep well at room temperature or in the refrigerator for around 2 months.

This recipe makes a batch of 60 treats, so it’s a great idea to freeze them. Just pop them into a container or freezer bag and they will keep well for 3-4 months. Thaw the cheesy dog biscuits at room temperature before giving to your pooch.

These 4-ingredient sweet potato dog biscuits are a wonderful healthy treat that I love to make for my two pups, Mabel and Daisy. They’re quick and easy to put together, and this recipe makes a huge batch so always have plenty on hand. Sweet potatoes are loaded with nutrients that protect their vision and can help them maintain a shiny coat. My dogs can’t get enough!

I’ve been getting more and more into making my own homemade dog treats, and my pups can’t seem to get enough! These sweet potato dog biscuits make a huge batch that costs even less than store-bought treats, and they’re made with healthy ingredients with no preservatives or additives.

What’s in This Sweet Potato Dog Biscuit Recipe?

  • Sweet Potatoes: Mashed cooked sweet potatoes add moisture and texture to these treats, plus they’re loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber! Plain pumpkin puree also works well here.
  • Eggs: Help bind the treats together. I like free-range eggs best.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds moisture to the treats. It’s super important to look for an applesauce with just one ingredient– apples! We don’t want any sugar or cinnamon here.
  • Whole Wheat Flour: Gives these treats structure. I like whole wheat for the added nutrition, but other types of flours also work.

Tips for Success

  • Always remove the skin of the sweet potatoes, as these can be difficult for your dog to digest.
  • You can peel the sweet potatoes and cook them in boiling water until tender, or you can roast them and then peel them. Then, you just need to mash them up and mix them with the other ingredients.
  • I used a bone-shaped cookie cutter for these treats, but you can use whatever you have to hand.
  • Let the treats cool fully before giving them to your dog or storing them.
  • These are treats and not meant to replace your dog’s regular meals.

How to Store

Store leftover sweet potato dog biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, in the refrigerator for up to 2 months, or in the freezer for up to 8 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Homemade cat treats are such a fun thing to make, and your cat(s) will absolutely love you if you give them these tasty salmon cat treats! You only need 3 ingredients to make these, and they’re super healthy and nutritious for your beloved pet.

What’s in these 3-Ingredient Cat Treats?

You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!

  • Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
  • Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
  • Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.

I love that these are real food ingredients, so I know my cat, Dill, is getting the best of the best!

It was such an honor to have this cat treats recipe printed in the August 2015 edition of Family Circle Magazine.

a mason jar filled up with salmon cat treats in the shape of goldfish
Can I use another fish for these treats besides salmon?

Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.

How can I fix dough that is too dry or too wet?

Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.

How can I tell when the cat treats are done baking?

They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.

How to Store Homemade Cat Treats

Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.

They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

I love making treats for my dogs, and these oat and apple dog pretzels are no exception. They’re super simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and the pretzel shape is ridiculously cute! I first made these treats for my soul dog, Scout, and I still love making them for my current pups, Mabel and Daisy. Every dog deserves treats made with love!

When I first started my cooking journey, I got really into reading the ingredients on everything. I was honestly so shocked at what was in the treats I was buying for Scout, and I got right to work developing some quick and easy homemade dog treats. These oat and apple dog pretzels are so simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and I know exactly what I’m giving to my fur babies. They’re healthy with no added fat or sugar– a perfect treat for pups!

What’s in This Dog Pretzel Recipe?

  • Egg: Helps bind the treats together. I like free-range eggs best.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds moisture to the treats. It’s super important to look for an applesauce with just one ingredient– apples! We don’t want any sugar or cinnamon here.
  • Oat Flour: Helps give the treats structure.
  • Rolled Oats: Add texture and fiber to the treats.

Tips for Success

  • These pretzels are a treat and are not meant to replace your dogs’ meals.
  • Allow the treats to fully cool before giving them to your furry friend.
  • I use gluten-free flour and oats. Just like humans, dogs can be sensitive to gluten, so I like to err on the side of caution.

How to Store

These oat and apple dog pretzels will keep well for up to 2 weeks. Let them cool completely and keep them stored at room temperature in an airtight container to keep them fresh. Preferably place them in a high cupboard where inquisitive noses can’t reach!

Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes

Calories 91kcal

Equipment

  • Kitchen Scale (optional)
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg 50 grams
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce 250 grams
  • 2 cups gluten-free oat flour 240 grams
  • ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats 75 grams

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Using a hand whisk, beat the egg and set it aside.
    1 large egg
  • Combine the applesauce, oat flour, and rolled oats in a large bowl. Pour all but 1 tablespoon of the egg over the mixture and set aside the remaining 1 tablespoon of egg.
1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 cups gluten-free oat flour, ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
  • Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture until a dough forms. The dough should be tacky but not overly sticky. Add a bit more or less flour if necessary.
  • Take a 2-tablespoon-sized piece of dough (approximate) and roll it into a tube. It should be about 10 inches long and about the width of a pencil.
  • Take each tube and make into a U shape, then twist the ends together and fold back to the top. This makes the pretzel shape. Pinch the ends in to make sure they’re secure.
  • Place the pretzels onto the baking tray. Brush the top of each pretzel with the remaining egg.
  • Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, until they're slightly browned and become crispy. The pretzels should be pretty hard, just like pups love them!
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.
