I'm a marine biologist with expertise in oceanic plastic pollution, invertebrate zoology, and online science communication. Currently, I'm a Knauss Sea Grant Fellow with the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Democrats.


News and Events

August 2013: I'll be giving three talks in Maine this August. The two seminars will be a mix of my science, outreach, and political work, and the science cafe will be Pacific garbage patch facts & fiction aimed at a general, preferably not so sober, audience. If you're in the area, come say hi!

14 May 2013 My blog post A field guide to privilege in marine science: some reasons why we lack diversity was a finalist for the best life-in-science post at the ScienceSeeker Awards! Check out the award page for tons of great posts on all kinds of science topics.

26 April 2013: Ever wanted to know how scientists can benefit from social media, and how to get started? Holly Bik and I have a paper in PLOS Biology that's aimed at you - check out An Introduction to Social Media for Scentists. It's currently the most-tweeted paper in PLOS history!

2 April 2013: Our paper on sea skaters and microplastic was one of the Biology Letters' top ten most downloaded articles in 2012! You can download the paper for free through mid-July.

4 February 2013: I have moved to Washington DC and started my Knauss Sea Grant Fellow with the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Democrats. My social media efforts will be on hiatus through January 2014.
